The chief postmaster general M Sampath released the special cover and it was received by Coimbatore's oldest living freedom fighter V K Kalimuthu. According to the organisers, Kalimuthu is more than 100-years-old and had participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942. He was imprisoned in the Coimbatore Central Prison for four months.
The special cover released by India Post on national unity day with the images of Sardar Patel and has been cancelled with the national unity day image shared by GOI.
"The cover has stamps and stationeries issued for Sardar Patel at different times by the Government of India. It also includes a coin issued for Sardar Patel in 1996. Also, it has stamps issued for Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Moulana Azad for their association with Sardar Patel during the pre-independence period," said a statement. The national unity pledge was taken during the event held near the GST Bhavan on Race Course Road.
